Our next vocabulary test will be on Wednesday, October 5.

3rd grade is working on the super list.  I have given them the list, but here it is.
1. superb– extremely good
2. superior– above the average in excellence
3. superstition-  odd beliefs that have no strong evidence to be true
4. superficial– being at or near the surface
5. supervise– to oversee a process, work, or workers

ALSO, review the following stems...
re– again
spec– look
sub-under
super– over
pre– before
in—not

Here is the Quizlet link...

4th Grade- please remember to study the review stems at the end of the lesson in the book.  They are also included on the Quizlet page.  Caesar's English Lesson 4

Remember each test is a cumulative review of the previous tests.  They need to know the definitions of all the stems we have learned thus far and the vocabulary words from lesson 2.

Reading Counts...

Did you know that there are 2 really great sites for looking up lexiles of books and reading counts point values?

The first site is Lexile.com.  This is a great site that you can enter in your child's lexile range and even interests and it will suggest books in that range.  This is a great way to discover new books/series that might interest your child.

The second site is probably my favorite.  It is the Scholastic Reading Counts site.  This site will give you the lexile and point value of a book.  If you go to the "Browse Book Expert Online" button, you can also enter in your child's lexile range on this site and it will allow you to see books that are on reading counts in your child's lexile.  This is handy tool if you visit the public library or if you just want to check to see if your child is reading books that are in their range.

Remember to...

  • Talk to your child each night about what they are reading.
  • Encourage them to read within their lexile.
  • And to stick with the same book at school and at home until it is done.

And most importantly... Children should be reading AT LEAST 20 minutes each night.

Happy Reading!

Here are the links for Quizlet if you kids wish to use Quizlet to study.

Walters Reading Group 3/4 Multiage

Getting back into the swing of things...
I realized that I didn't send a vocabulary email home last week.  I am so sorry, but I am also still trying to get in the swing of things.  Hopefully your children informed you about our next test.

Our next test will be on Tuesday, September 13.

3rd grade is working on the Spec. List.  Here is the link to the quizlet for them to practice.

Quizlet: 3rd Grade Spec List

4th grade is working on Lesson 2.  Please be aware that they will need to not only know this weeks words, but they will also need to know the previous week's stems.  Not the words that went along with lesson 1 just the stems and their meanings.  Here is the quizlet link for their list...

Quizlet Lesson 2 Ceasar's English

Hope you are enjoying this short week!

Nightly Reading Expectations

The expectation here at Webb is that all students should be reading at least 20 min. each night.  I know that many of the children don't seem to be doing this.  It is AMAZING what just 20 min will do.
Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind...

  • Provide a quiet spot for your child to read to you or to read on their own.
  • Talk to them about what they are reading and how they are progressing through the book.
  • Encourage them to stick with one book until it is completed and they have quizzed on it (if it is a quiz book).  I always tell my students to stick with a book for at least 3 chapters before they give up on it.
  • Read early in the afternoon rather than at nighttime.  Some children do great reading 20 min. before bed and it may help them calm down.  Others may need an earlier routine because they are just too tired to read right before bed.  I know at my house reading while I make dinner works better for us.  Find a time that works for you and your child and begin a routine.

Thank you for encouraging your child to complete their nightly reading.  You will see big payoffs in their achievement.
