Just a reminder that we will be having our next literature circle tomorrow, Friday, January 20. Each child should have read their chapters for week 3 AND completed the assignment that goes along with it. Please check in with your child to make sure they are ready to participate in the literature circle tomorrow.
Our next vocabulary quiz will be on January 27th. 3rd grade is working on Chapter 4: Space is the Place and 4th grade is on Lesson 11 in Caesar's English.
Yesterday we got to sample Turkish Delight just like Edmund in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The children discovered that Turkish Delight is a sweet gummy treat covered in powdered sugar. Ask your child if they liked it.

Do you Hoopla?
I discovered an awesome service that our public library provides for FREE! It is called Hoopla. You can download books (including audio books), movies, and music. With this service, you can download up to 6 things each month. All you need is a device such as a computer, tablet, phone, etc., a library card, and an internet connection. Our library actually provides multiple digital services. I am providing a link below to this service below.

WALTERS READING: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
On January 26th, we will be attending a field trip to Clowes Hall to see the play Freedom Train. It is the story of Harriet Tubman. It is a wonderful play. Please look for the permission slip that went home yesterday.
On February 15th, we are going to the high school to see the play version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
We are very excited about both of these opportunities.
This week we are going to begin reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We will be having a literature circles in class discussing what we have read. The children will have a sheet in the back of their yellow folder that is an assignment organizer for this unit. Each time I assign another set of chapters we will add the date on the sheet of when our next literature circle is. It is EXTREMELY important that the children have completed the assigned reading before the date of our literature circle. There will also be an assignment that goes along with the reading. For each set of chapters, they will have a different role in the literature circle. The roles are described on the back of the assignment organizer. These assignments will be for a grade and should be completely thoroughly. Please, please, please make sure your child is prepared to participate in the literature circles by making sure they have read the assigned pages and completed their assignments.
I will be passing out the books and materials for their first assignment today. Our first literature circle will be on Friday, January 13. Your child should have the assignment and reading done before class.
A few of the children read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe last year, so they will be reading Freedom Train and participating in their own literature circle.

Reading Counts...
Did you know that there are 2 really great sites for looking up lexiles of books and reading counts point values?
The first site is Lexile.com. This is a great site that you can enter in your child's lexile range and even interests and it will suggest books in that range. This is a great way to discover new books/series that might interest your child.
The second site is probably my favorite. It is the Scholastic Reading Counts site. This site will give you the lexile and point value of a book. If you go to the "Browse Book Expert Online" button, you can also enter in your child's lexile range on this site and it will allow you to see books that are on reading counts in your child's lexile. This is handy tool if you visit the public library or if you just want to check to see if your child is reading books that are in their range.
Remember to...
- Talk to your child each night about what they are reading.
- Encourage them to read within their lexile.
- And to stick with the same book at school and at home until it is done.
And most importantly... Children should be reading AT LEAST 20 minutes each night.
Happy Reading!
